Jörg Paul Janka  studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Since 1995 he has been co-editor of the photo and video magazine Ohio together with Uschi Huber (until 1999 together with Hans-Peter Feldmann and Stefan Schneider). Jörg Paul Janka continues to work as an international media-based artist. He focuses primarily on film and photography, which he transforms into 3D spaces using computers and develops into new chamber play backdrops. 

In this new exhibition, he confronts us with images of self-constructed stores and stages them into spaces that are mystically charged because they convey multi-layered visual levels, some of which we can no longer visually delineate. In his 5-10 minute films in particular, the static nature of a space is nullified because it is constantly changing in its continuous sequence of images and suggests new backdrops to us. 

Can this be transferred to our world? The media world has long since overcome the distinction between fiction and reality and we don’t even need to use the new buzzword AI to illustrate the complexity of images. 

Using the example of store interiors, Jörg Paul Janka beautifully illustrates the wealth of ideas of interior design experts from real life, which he recomposes into completely new visual experiences using his own means, and this is what makes his work so interesting and complex.

At the same time, in the transformation of major social processes, we are experiencing the significance of spaces in a completely new way, not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also forcing us to think differently about their use and content in order to be able to shape them for ourselves.
